98 points & the top rated Italian red from Antonio Galloni in the past seven vintages (under $60), the Cantalupo Breclemae Ghemme is one for the cellar! Crafted in northern Italy, the Arlunnos have had vineyards in this area for a couple of centuries, but did not start the Cantalupo winery until 1969, when the region of Ghemme was given its own DOCG. A cru bottling from "Collis Breclemae," made from old vines in the best sections of the vineyards, the 2016 vintage is the benchmark for the entire Ghemme DOCG. Think a lighter style cru Barolo, with great complexity and depth, with sturdy tannins, vibrant acid and textured minerality. This is an outstanding, traditional style Italian red that captures the potential and pedigree of Nebbiolo.
"Cantalupo's 2016 Ghemme Collis Breclemae is wild, exotic and totally beguiling. Even so, my impression is that the 2016 is only showing a hint of its potential. In the glass, the 2016 is both powerful and incredibly finessed. Time brings out hints of red fruit, orange peel, cedar, tobacco and dried rose petal. Tasting the 2016 today is like reading the first chapter of a book, knowing the full story has yet to be told. Quite simply, the 2016 Collis Breclemae is magical. Don't miss it. 2026 - 2046."
