Considered one of the deans of the Chilean wine industry, Aurelio Montes founded his eponymous winery back in the 1980's, well before the South American wine boom. A pioneer in both quality and pricing, Montes was one of the first to produce an "ultra-premium" red from a remote part of Chile's Colchagua Valley called Apalta. Together with Casa Lapostolle, who won Wine Spectator's Wine of the Year in 2008 for Clos Apalta, Montes decided this was the perfect spot to create world-class reds. Celebrating 30 years, they have just created their best wines to date!
"A consistent Purple Angel that really delivers the carmenere’s plushness when ripened well. Dark olives, blackberries and red chili chocolate with a splash of spice and cigar box. Fleshy and concentrated with plenty of fine-grained tannins that extend to a very creamy finish. 92% carmenere, around half from Marchigue and half from Apalta, with 8% petit verdot. Better from 2025." James Suckling, 98 Points
