Want to try something new in 2023? Carmenere is the flagship wine of Chile in the same way Malbec is for Argentina. Relatively unknow because the best expressions are usually labeled as something else. Montes Purple Angel, Errazuriz Kai, and former Wine Spectator Wine of the Year Casa Lapostolle Clos Apalta. The Legado Reserva is another outstanding value from the De Martino family, who have been producing wine for almost 70 years in the heart of the Maipo Valley. Their Carmenere reflects the Isla de Maipo's terroir, aged 15 months in French oak, with juicy notes of blueberries and plums, while keeping the alcohol in check at 13.5%. These wines are concentrated and elegant, each with a distinctive personality. Where else but Chile can you find five 91+ scores, aged 15 months in French oak, and under $15 a bottle!
"The 2019 Carménère Legado comes from Maipo and was aged for 15 months in used barrels. Violet in hue. The aromas include the variety’s signature white and green pepper and blackberry. Mild and voluminous in the mouth, it is defined by its easygoing nature and herbal hints." Vinous Media, 91 Points
"I love the herbal and peppery nose of the 2019 Legado Carmenere, which has moderate ripeness and alcohol (13.5%) with mellow acidity and very fine-grained tannins. It has character and is varietal and a little austere on the palate, where the wine comes through as very balanced." The Wine Advocate, 91 Points
